Magazine Drafts and Final Piece

This is my final copy of my magazine and as you can see from the previous draft I have added a menu strip at the top of my magazine so that it would all link in together. I think adding this to my magazine has completed it completely as it still has some slight white space but the white space works for the type on image on the front page. I didn't think I could change that much on my other two pages as when I asked a group of friends they said that if I added more text or images to the pages it would make it look cluttered and I wanted to go simple yet still stand out amongst other magazines.

Magazine Article

So you are 17 and just released an album which peaked at number 1 in the UK how does it feel?                 It’s amazing you know this has been my dream ever since I was a little girl. I really didn’t expect to go to number 1, I was so shocked when my mum came I told me I just sat there in shock and I started to scream.
Since you are a college student are you going to continue with your education?                                             It’s difficult trying to keep up with all my studies but I am just going to give my 100% and it hopefully will pay off but I do have a tutor with me everywhere I go and she helps me sort out my schedule so I am always able to fit in my education.
If you weren’t a singer what would you think you would be doing right now?                                                 I think I would still be in college perusing my dream in becoming a teacher. I’ve wanted to be a teacher ever since I was very young.
What were your friend’s reactions to your success and leaving college?                                                         My friends have always been very supportive no matter what I did and this just proves how strong of a friendship group we have created. It is always hard leaving the ones you love I cried for hours knowing I was going away for quite some time.
What was the most embarrassing thing you have ever done?                                                                         Aha, well I was on stage no long after I had been signed and I ended up falling down the stairs head first but luckily I wasn’t hurt and I just got back up and started singing. It was kind of funny seeing the audience in such shock.
So who are your inspirations?                                                                                                                       I really look up to Katy Perry and Taylor Swift as these artists are always true to themselves and make amazing music despite all the hate they receive. Also this type of music is quite similar to my own music with it being about myself and my surroundings.
Can you tell us about the music on your album and what type of songs we can expect to hear?                       The album is kind of like a story of my life to explain what I was like growing up and how I have become who I am today. I also have a song on there called support which is basically about how my fan base has grown and how they have helped me through my journey. Also I have been collaborating with some of the biggest artists around like Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran it’s going to be a dream come true. The Album will be released on December 20th and will be in most shops and also available 0for digital download the same day.
How was it working with Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran?                                                                                     It has got to be the most coolest thing I have ever done like seriously my first album and I’m working with people as big as they are I just can’t believe it and as for Beyoncé and Ed they were the most down to earth people I have ever met and I now Ed is like my best friend we talk almost every day. It’s a pleasure being able to work in this type of environment.
Are you going to be doing a tour soon?                                                                                                         Yes! I am so excited it starts in January which is less than a month away now and I can wait to see all my fans and perform.  I have always wanted to perform in front of a crowd and now I’m doing it in front of 11,000 fans. I can’t wait!
So do you think you will ever get sick of the music industry?                                                                         No I don’t think I will ever get sick of it. I worked so hard to get here and get into the industry. I can never give up even if I tried  I know I would have great support and encouragement to carry on.
Do you have any social networking you fans talk to you on?                                                                         Yes I actually do I am on Facebook and Twitter at the moment and you can follow me @KristenMoore and like my page on Facebook. I post almost every day giving an in-depth to my fans telling them what I am doing and what is coming up. I have almost 1 million followers on twitter which is amazing I never thought this would be possible.

Language Use In Articles

Photo Shoot

These images are from my magazine photo shoot in which I conducted different types of poses for the model and also towards the end with dressing up the model in ridiculous clothing such as wigs coats and also a horse head. I also used some props to get across that this magazine was a music one. At the very end of this shoot I used some images that I had previously taken from a concert so when I put these onto my magazine its would show a real performance image.

Music Magazine Planning

These slides show my flat plans for the music magazine although they are likely to change throughout depending on my images and sizes but this is a rough guide to the layout of the magazine.

On the right are types of fonts and colour themes I decided on for the magazine house style The image one the left shows the colour scheme, type of text and name and ideas for kickers and contents. I changed the font to one which was already on in design because this type of text would be easier to manipulate and display the text type. the thicker red ring around each idea is the one I am going to bring forward to put onto my magazine. I got the idea of studio from a headline which was on about artists in a studio which I though would be a good idea and use for the masthead of my magazine. The text just below this is the ideas for my contents page of what will  be included/featured in the magazine although I haven't quite progressed on them just yet as I am changing around my flat plans and photographs. The colour scheme I have chosen is white, black and purple for the reason being that with the graphic feature going to be a bold yellow will make this stand out against the purple and black which can be quite dark and also I could change around the type of purple used as changing it either darker or lighter depending on the surrounding colours.

College Magazine Evaluation

I think the photography in my college magazine could have been better as I haven’t included many photos and this is because all photographs that I had taken were pretty much all the same and had no real difference. Also as I didn't know where to put most of the items in my magazine they are a bit out of place and kind of mix match. I also have a lot of white space where I could have included more content. For this magazine I didn't really have a colour scheme or type of font which I think really makes it fail as a magazine. The gradient effect I think makes it look more of a failed poster type as it has no indication that it is a magazine. The  masthead alone doesn't really stand out like it is supposed to and it kind of blends in with the background. The only think I can think of that I like about this is the bubble shape which I think is quite effective as it stands out like its supposed to and this can be a good use of white space.

College Magazine Preparation and Drafts

I have come up with three names that are basic and quite easy to remember for a college magazine, these are PPC, Pursglove News and Prior Life. All these names are associated with our very own college. For this magazine, am going to be making it about 28 pages long with a certain amount of pages dedicated to each topic. I am going to be dedicating 5 pages to adverts, 8 pages to music, 4 to news, 1 page on offers, 3 pages for real life, 4 pages to interviews and 2 pages for fashion. I have chosen to have quite a long magazine as most people preferred reading longer articles in my results and this is obviously going to need more pages.

This was my first draft for the college magazine and the colour themes for this were based on the most popular colour in the results which was black and white. With red and yellow being the second most popular colour I decided that with black and white being very plain that I would incorporate some colour in the magazine and I went with the second most popular colours as you will be able to see further on in my drafts.

As you can see here this is where I chose to put in the colours red and yellow and also some images and a colour background for the front cover. From here the magazine doesn’t change much apart from the layout and some extra images added. I have also included a white liner to the title on the cover page so this would stand out against the grey background. I have also chosen to go with a grey background as grey links white and black together and gives a good tone to the pages and this also makes the other cover lines stand out from the background.

As I said before I change the layout of the design as you can see to the left and I think that the way this has been laid out makes the cover look slightly fuller and also makes the cover lines stand out more to catch the attention of the readers. Before I could change the contents page I had to decide what other images I could include on their which I thought was difficult as I hadn’t really planned out my cover page as well as my front cover which I should have done. This would have also made the contents page look fuller.

This is my final magazine cover and contents page and as you can see it looks more fuller. I have changed the layout once again to add more things like the x-factor logo and giving the image alone on the contents page a heading and made the page look like it has more contents to it than before. The new front cover has a hardly any white

space for more cover lines which I think is a good thing although it only has 5 cover lines I still think this magazine could draw in attention. Yet again I have also included slightly more colour with the purple logo which makes that specific article stand out against the rest and this is because of the college colour theme is purple so I thought I would also include that and the yellow explosion stands out as it is the brightest thing on the magazine and would also draw in more attention.                                                                                    

                                                                                            

Researching Music Magazines

 Billboard is an international magazine founded in 1894 which means it has been running for over 119 years, although this has not always been a music magazine company as it only started magazines in 1936. This magazine ranks the top 100 songs regardless the genre, based on digital sales, radio airplay, and internet streaming data. Billboard also has a very noticable look to it as it has a logo and the artist always stands out from the colourful backgrounds. you can see that billboard has a specific look as the artists here are in the centre and the sub-headings are sat around them and also the company logo is as the top in bold lettering as this also stands out against everything.

The magazine started in 1896 as this was the year the first magazine got produced although then it was about quite a few different things as it was classed as a trade paper and then later became a music magazine.the publisher for this particuallar magazine is called Prometheus Global Media and this magazine produces several other magazines like The Hollywood Reporter, Adweek, Backstage and Film journal international which are different types of media magazines. This magazine offers a printed magazine, an app and also it is working with radio companys to provide the chart hits. There is also a Billboard music Award is an honor given by Billboard, the preeminent publication covering the music business.
As stated above the magazine used to be a trade paper covering topics like circuses, carnivals, amusement parks, fairs, vaudeville, minstrels, whale shows and other live entertainment but this stopped in 1961 as there was another magazine that got produced called Amusement Buisness so they decided to make the magazine devoted to the music industry. The current readership figures are 16,327 and this is weekly.

As you can see here this is what the double page spreads in Billboard magazine looks like compaired to the older one on the right. The differences such as colour and layout has changed over the years as the one on the right was made in the early 1900's and the one to the right was made in 2012. In the 1900's the magazine text was very basic and told you very little of the artist herself as then it wasn't an interview, it was more of the information abour her and what she was doing. Whereas now billboard has an interview with the artist and they get to know about things from the artist instead and also goes into detail about where shes been and what there going to do next. The text in this article is a lot more complex and has inverted speech to make the artist sound more interesting and also helping the artist gain a larger audience.On the 1900's article the page had the basic layout like a heading, subheading, image and text whereas the newer piece has images,inverted speech, the artists name and a caption. The photography of the 2012 article is from a previous performace and the photography of the 1900's article is a poster like image. I think that the 2012 aritcle is more effective as you know as a reader that the text is based of what the artist has said and the 1900's is more to advertise the artist.

I would say that the closest magazine to Billboard will be the Vibe magazine as this magazine is layed out very similar but appears to a smaller audience of the R&B and hip-hop genre. Although Billboard is not seen to have any rivalrys I would say that either vibe magazine or NME as these magazines are quite similar into what they produce and the layout of the magazine. Also NME started its production idea from Billboard magazine as this was only sold in the US NME decided to make one for the uk and this i think will probably be the closest match to the the Billboard magazine. Plus the NME is like a uk verison of billboard.

Bill Werde is the editorial director for billboard magazine although previously he worked for Rolling Stone as a associate editor. Plus he was also a freelance journalist for a number of publications including The New York Time, Washington Post, Village Voice and Wired Magazine. He started in billboard as the news editor and slowly climbed his way up to become the editorial director.

College Magazine Research

These college magazines are all quite similar in a way as the title is behind the model and the model is the one to stand out the most. Also the camera angle is a mid-shot with headings around the model.

The college lifestyle magazine has a model and background in grey and white and this makes the colourful headers and titles stand out more than what anything else does and this makes the magazine stand out more from the others as this is different.

The campus life has a model that is stood with a background like in the grass or in a car park and I think this makes the magazine look more edgy. Also the writing for these magazines are in black and white which makes the image stand out more rather that the text.

 

College Audience Questionnaire

The questions I have chose to be on my questionnaire will give me a audience of the same kind as I have asked if they are subscribed to any magazines at the moment and with the most popular answer I will generate a magazine similar to the music magazine they are subscribed to. Also this magazine will feature the most popular answers so that it really will be based on the audiences preference.The reason I asked what there parents did for a living was to put them into social classes of upper class, lower class, middle class ect. This told me how likely say the upper class would buy maggazines. the age of them told me what the most popular age group for reading magazines were so for when I came to make my own this give me information on who to based the audience on.

After recieving the responces I found out that the most popular theme colour would be black and white although the other colours had a very low count. The favourite music genre was tied between pop and rock, and ovbiously this tells us that the main thing that intrests people most when buying is the music articles. There was also comments to see interviews and new music suggestions. The majority of the answers said they prefer longer articles than short ones which I found quite unusual as most people I know prefer reading short articles as it doesnt bore them as much but I suppose that the longer articles have to be as interesting as possible so it doesnt send the reader off to sleep. Only  people from the responces were subscribed to a magazine and that was NME magazine. Most of the responces came from first year females which tells us that they will be the one mostly reading a college magazine.

5SOS Deconstruction

5seconds of summer all have kind of a messy hairstyle but smartish clothing and  I don't think this picture represents who they as the background is down a back ally and this makes me think of rappers.The ally is pretty clean considering where it is and only has a few leaves and a wheely bin in the background. Also is you tend to go down allys you notice that there tends to be a lot of grafiti and all the walls are clean appart from the clean painting. The body language the boys are showing is typical way boys generally stand with either their hands in their pockets or crossed. The expression on their faces is the type of face you do when your not allowed to smile on your id pictures but also comes across to me as though they want to smile expecially michael on the far right as his has a kind of smirk on his face. The way the light is on this image is giving them a shadow as it is coming from behind them and this makes them stand out a lot more from the background as its giving them more of a 3D image. Three of the boys are wearing black skinny jeans and they have put ashton in blue jeans with turn ups as I think this makes him stand out more as he is the newest member of the band and i think they wanted their fans to notice this by making him stand out slighty. Also they are stood in order with the grey, black, grey, black and this is used quite often in images as their outfits are normally all very similar. By putting Luke in the denim shirt this tells us that he is the lead singer of the band as the lead singers tend to stand out a lot more than the dummer or guitarists. The camera angle is a low closeish shot of the boys which makes them apear taller than what they originally are.

Multimedia Glog

My aim for this is to define the image of the pop rock genre and I am using these artists as a prime example as I think that these artists are quite popular in the genre.

1st Photo Shoot

These pictures from my first photo shoot include mid shots of each person and also a passport photo image. On a few of these images you can see that I was playing around with the props to try and get the personality of the model across to the audience. Also in some I have incorporated the rule of thirds by placing the model in the left hand side  to create a small amount of shadow near the face.
